Travel Guide
Plan before you go
Laos travel prep by season
Weather in Laos shifts sharply between the November dry months, the March heat, and monsoon river levels. This guide covers climate, packing, transit, and local etiquette so you can plan with fewer surprises.
Seasons in Laos
Three seasons, three trade-offs

Wet season, roughly June to October
River levels rise and trails turn muddy, so kayaking becomes the stronger choice. Expect afternoon downpours and plan lighter daily distances.
Cool dry season, November to February
Days are mild and trails are firmer, which suits trekking. Nights in the hills can be cold, so pack a warm layer.

Shoulder months, March to May
March brings heat and low water, while April and May grow hotter. Trekking is possible but midday walks are hard, so start early and carry extra water.
Gear and etiquette
Packing, transit, and village manners
Pack for humid trails, river crossings, and cold mountain nights. Bring a quick-dry layer, a headlamp, and a dry bag for boat transfers.
Ask before photographing people or entering temples, and dress modestly in villages. Homestays run on local hospitality, so carry small gifts only if your guide advises it.
